News

recent third-quarter survey of shippers indicates that the freight industry is in a state of uncertainty. While excess inventories have largely been reduced, there is still no rush to restock. Shippers' overall view of the economy is slightly lower this quarter, but retail shippers have a more positive outlook. The majority of respondents are planning to maintain or increase their inventories, but only 5% of shippers are looking to increase stock levels. Most shippers do not expect inventory levels to normalize until next year, with the majority anticipating this to happen in the second half of the year. Transportation capacity is generally expected to loosen, except for less-than-truckload (LTL) capacity, which is expected to tighten. A separate survey shows a disconnect between carriers and brokers, who expect a less active peak season, and shippers, who anticipate a better one. Shippers may be cautious due to uncertainties in consumer buying intentions and past overordering mistakes, while carriers are hopeful for a restocking surge, albeit potentially later than expected.
